The Future of Kona Hills Campground: Planned Amenities & Upgrades

At Kona Hills Campground, we embrace the beauty of rustic camping while striving to offer a comfortable and enjoyable experience for our guests. As we launch our inaugural season in 2025, amenities will be limited as we establish our foundation. Here’s what you can expect during our first year:

Opening Season Amenities:

  • Potable Water: Hand pump access to fresh artesian well water

  • Restrooms: Portable toilets

  • Campfire Comfort: Modern fire rings at each site

  • Dining & Convenience: Picnic tables at each site

  • Vehicle Access: 8 of 40 campsites accessible by vehicle (the rest require short hikes)

  • Trail & Scenic Area Access: Limited access to the Lake Superior Overlook; additional trails temporarily closed as we develop infrastructure

While our initial offerings focus on providing a simple, back-to-nature experience, we have big plans for the future!

Planned Upgrades in the Coming Years

As Kona Hills grows, we aim to enhance the camping experience with:

  • Permanent Bathhouses: Flushing toilets and hot showers for added comfort

  • Sauna Facilities: A cozy retreat for relaxation after a day outdoors

  • Expanded Access: A fully graveled loop road and improved site access, allowing all 40 campsites to be drive-in capable

  • Year-Round Glamping: Unique accommodations for those seeking a more luxurious escape

Future Recreational Additions

Beyond amenities, we’re also committed to expanding recreational opportunities for our guests, including:

Kona Hills Campground is just getting started, and we can’t wait to grow alongside our community of campers. Stay tuned for updates, and be sure to visit us in our opening season for 2025 to experience the magic of the Northwoods! Thank you for your support!

We are currently exploring off-grid options for bathrooms with full amenities.

Small cabins or off-grid glamping accommodations are a future consideration we hope to be able to offer in future seasons as well!
