Rustic Camping Above Lake Superior

2026 Season Dates: May 22-October 18

40 secluded campsites, 80 acres of forest, and Lake Superior just minutes away in the heart of Marquette county—welcome to the camping experience you've been dreaming of.

On-Site Amenities

Built for simplicity. Expanding with intention.

Fresh, artesian water

Fresh, artesian water is available for campers at the welcome area via a hand pump well. Fill water bottles, containers and more. There is no hose hook up anywhere on site.

Vault Restrooms

Restroom building with a wooden door and stone wall exterior, located outdoors with a shaded porch area.

The 2026 season we will have vault toilets, no showers. We are in the process of upgrading these facilities and are working to bring more comforts in future seasons.

Fire Pit & Picnic Table

A picnic table and fire ring in a wooded area with trees and fall foliage, on a sunny autumn day.

Each site features a large, double walled fire pit with cooking grate, and picnic table. Local, kiln dried firewood is available for purchase at the welcome area with cash or card.

Why Camp at Kona Hills?

There’s more here than just a campsite.

80 Acres, Only 40 sites

Two people sitting at a wooden picnic table in a forested area with a black van parked nearby, surrounded by tall green trees under bright sunlight.

Enjoy dispersed camping style sites. No packed rows of RVs. Private sites with room to move, not just set up camp.

200 Feet Above Lake Superior

Built into hills, rock outcroppings, and wooded terrain, not a flat loop campground.

Basecamp for Adventure

Minutes from downtown Marquette, but far enough to feel like you’re in the woods with 80 acres of land to explore right on site.

Real Dark Sky Camping

Night sky filled with stars and the Milky Way galaxy, framed by silhouetted trees.

We have very minimal lighting that is dark sky compliant. This means more stars to enjoy!

What to Expect Before You Book

This isn’t a typical campground. A quick read now will make your stay a lot better.

  • Rustic campgrounds like Kona Hills are perfect for campers who value privacy, space, and a deep connection with nature, but we understand this style of camping may not be for everyone. Our campground offers a minimalist, nature-immersed experience for those looking to disconnect and explore the outdoors.

No water, electric, or sewer at sites. This is a fully rustic campground.

  • No office or check-in desk. Book online, read your confirmation email, review posted information at the Welcome Area, and go straight to your site.

Our team is on-site every day to keep things running smoothly and to ensure everyone respects the land and each other.

    👉 How self-serve camping works

  • Small RVs, travel trailers, and recreational vehicles under 24’ are welcomed to Kona Hills. Larger rigs won’t fit or maneuver safely.

All sites are pull-in or back-in. There are no pull-through sites. You should be comfortable maneuvering your setup in tighter, more rugged conditions.

  • Sites are built into hills, rock, and wooded areas. Not a flat campground, leveling blocks recommended. Most tent sites have a 10’x12’ wooden platform for an elevated level surface.

👉 Explore the land and layout

  • Kona Hills feels tucked away, but we’re still within the city of Marquette. You may hear daytime road or harbor noise, along with occasional activity from a nearby shooting range.

Most of the time, this fades into the background, especially with wind in the trees and constant bird song.

Marquette locals built and operate Kona Hills to open access to this incredible landscape, expand outdoor recreation opportunities, and create the kind of campground we’ve always wished existed. Kona Hills is the foundation for a larger vision—one that supports adventure, stewardship of the land, and the local outdoor economy.

Kona Hills is just getting started

Our first season in 2025 proved something we already believed: people are looking for space, quiet, and real camping. Campers from across the Midwest, and beyond, spent their nights under the pines, watched sunsets over Lake Superior, and helped bring this place to life.

Kona Hills is a long-term project for us. We're tending to the land and building thoughtfully—adding improvements each year while protecting the quiet, natural experience that drew us here in the first place.

For 2026, that means new trails, expanded campsites, and new vault restrooms.

Come experience Kona Hills.
